How Greek antiquity worked

The old Greeks loved their mighty structures and their many gods. For them, religion and architecture were closely linked, since many Greek monuments were dedicated to the gods in order to win their favor.

The golden age of ancient Greece, around 500-400 BC, was a complicated time. The Greeks often waged wars with their neighbors, but they also created beautiful cities and sophisticated forms of government. The most important Greek city-state, Athens, was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom. And at the center of Athens was the famous citadel called the Acropolis.

▸ golden age of ……

▸ Acropolis 卫城

After surviving a terrible siege by the Persians, the Athenians gave thanks to their city’s goddess by “bestowing” her with a lavish gift: the Parthenon temple. They built this grand structure from 447-438 BC, on the highest spot of the Acropolis. And the Parthenon’s builders came up with a few new things to make the temple truly special.

▸ give thanks to 向……

“空转”用英语怎么说?(be running on empty)

Continuing to operate with no or very little enthusiasm, energy, or resources left. A reference to a car that has nearly run out of fuel.

They know we have been running on empty for years.

I'm really running on empty.
